Pinterest Finds

Maybe it's because I feel like I have no time to do anything anymore, but recently I have been finding lots of stuff of pinterest that I'm interested in and want to try out. Here are a few things that have made the show-and-tell cut;

Have you been up to any simple crafty things recently? I'd be interested in reading about them!

What I made: hair ribbon tutorial

I've always been inspired by this pin - http://pinterest.com/pin/169799848423174908/. I think it leads to a tutorial about how to wrap your hair under the band to create the wrapped look, but I'm more interested in the band itself. So when I found these beautiful rolls at a local craft chain...

I knew I'd found my latest project!

With any project that you start without a tutorial, there were a couple of hitches -

Actually, there was only that one. I had thought that I needed to be cautious of where to cut the ribbon but didn't think it through enough. It did only happen once though- I learned from my mistakes.

Anywho, here is a tutorial in case you're interested, these ones are super simple :)
You will need: pretty ribbon, fabric elastic band, thread to match the colour of your ribbon and a needle. Simple as that!

1) unwrap your ribbon and measure it's length from the behind/bottom of one ear, round the top of your head to the next one. Remember to consider the pattern and where is best to cut. This is only rough, I have other hair ribbons with lots of elastic but I don't like them as much for that very reason. If you plan on wearing it with your hair down (or like in the pin above!) then it won't matter as much, but I'm planning on wearing them with my hair in a big messy bun so they'll be on show.

2) sew one end of he fabric elastic band to one end of the ribbon before you cut your elastic, this means you can place it around your head again to get it at the right tension for you. Consider which side to sew the elastic on: think about which side will be seen when you wear it and try and keep your stitches neat.

3) wrap around your head, trim the elastic at the right length for you, and sew the other side to the ribbon. Trim any unruly bits like the one I'm touching with the safety pin...

4) sign off your thread and trim, you're done!

Ta-da! Easy as pi. Is that meant to be pi or pie? On a similar note I'm reading the life of pi, have you? What did you think? It's going a bit slow at the moment but I like how he describes animals in a zoo vs the wild, that was interesting.

P.s. Don't let anyone come in whilst you're doing your creating. Michael came in to my room and complained about the mess... I told him where to go ;)

It feels really good to be making again after the move- definitely got the creative juices flowing!

Thank you

Michael's parents were very generous recently and I wanted to make sure they knew how much we appreciated it, so played round with a couple of ideas for a Thank you card-

And here is the finished piece

It's only little but I think they appreciated it :) It's also super simple and if you have spare patterned card lying around (you definitely will from Christmas - I always save some pulling cracker paper) then you can try it out too! If you like, that is :)

P.s. Michael and I found a desk today, yippee! It's more of a pull-out-dining-table in all honesty, but I do want a lot of space. It ended up being dark wood, but at £20 it's not going to be my forever desk, and it's a very good compromise.

More Birthday Posts

How ridiculously long can I drag my 21st out for? yeah, still going! My old housemate (boohoo) Alyna bought me craft-themed gifts this year, and although she was worried, the girl did good :)

although it is all beautiful, I'm super excited about the Washi tape!! I've been looking for some for ages, she somehow secretly knew! Thanks so much Aly :)

Catherine's Guest Post #1

So, now I'm back at uni I don 't have a lot of time/resources to make lots of crafty pretty things so I thought, instead of letting my blog suffer, why not ask for a guest post?! I am more than happy to introduce you to my mother and her first ever blog post!
Hi, I'm Stacey's Mum and I've been invited to make a guest spot (I'm feeling very privileged!!) Welcome to my crafting world ..................

Wall Hanging Tutorial

I have seen lots of these types of things but wanted to personalise one with my own twist. You can choose your quote / sentiment, background colours and fonts - just make it your own!

I decided on the quote and cut pieces of stiff card into the arrangement I wanted - you can guess the sizes because at this stage you can still trim them down.
Find the letters you want to use and lay them out on the card pieces so that you can cut to size.
I found and painted up some card board letters, I used foil tape over letters and coloured it vintage and I printed a font out onto the backing paper and used Glossy Accents to give it some depth - basically the more varied the better, some capitals some lower case, whatever suits you.
I used co-ordinating papers for the background and covered each piece back and front (if the back of yours won't be seen then you could just cover the fronts).
I then ran each edge across a co-ordinating Tim Holtz ink pad to finish them nicely.
To make sure the pieces hang fairly straight you need to take a ruler and mark the holes for the chain / wool / string or whatever you have decided to join the pieces with.

I chose to use eyelets and used my hefty Cropadile hole puncher to make the holes and then added them (you don't have to use eyelets you could leave the holes as punched, especially if using a thicker wool or string as joiners).
You do  need to think about where your letters sit in relation to the holes - you don't want the eyelet in the middle of your letters.

Once you have decorated each piece and joined them together, you can add any extras you want, like buttons or peel offs, butterflies or flowers and Voila .......... you have your own personalised wall hanging ready to put up or to give as a present.

Hope you enjoyed this one - I'm looking forward to my next invitation - maybe for Christmas!!?
